Jaakko Eino Kalevi
Beggars Music is thrilled to announce the signing of Jaakko Eino Kalevi, an exciting young Finnish musician whose soulful songs touch on disco, new-wave, jazz and dub, all performed in a style that’s very much his own. Jaakko lives in Helsinki, where he works part-time as a tram driver, runs his own label, JEKS, and plays from time to time with various local ensembles. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, he’s happiest behind the drums, and is equally adept at singing, programming and arranging.
Arriving at Beggars Music with a solo discography studded with gems – including the ‘Töölö Labyrinth’ album and ‘Chamber of Love’ EP – and a reputation as a terrific live performer, Jaakko is one of those rare songwriters who early on found a voice to match his vision. Currently working on new material in Helsinki, Jaakko’s enchanting music looks set to be cherished all around the world.
Jaakko is set to release his Dreamzone EP on Domino subsidiary Weird World in December. As a taster for his album due next spring, Dreamzone’s four songs take their cues from influences as broad-ranging as Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry (for his “singularity and drive”, explains Jaakko), the “softness and adultness” of Chris Rea, Finnish composer Jimi Tenor and the hyper-vivid fantasy worlds of the more contemporary Ariel Pink and Connan Mockasin. The result is a hugely enticing window into Jaakko’s world – a colourful, magical place where everything happens in its own time and nature and technology get along harmoniously.
“A free spirit capable of turning his hand to any broadly electronic style and making it his own… Kalevi is naturally funky.” – Uncut
“It’s done the way Jaakko does things: strange and beautiful with a side order of deep-fried question mark.” – VICE
